I am Md. Sirajul Islam Molla from Bangaldesh (a fourth IWRM bursary winner)
I was born on 4 June 1957 in a village of Gopalganj district in Bangladesh. I obtained my Master’s in Social Science from the University of Dhaka in 1983. Besides, I obtained a Post-Graduate Diploma in Personnel Management in 1987 from the Bangladesh Institute of Management (formerly Bangladesh Management Development Cenre) and a one-year Diploma in Secretarial Science in 1982 from Young Men’s Christian Organization, Dhaka.
I joined ICDDR,B in the middle of 1982 and since then I has been serving the Centre in different capacities for more than 26 years, out of which about 15 years of my experiences combine administration, management, communication, dissemination and resource mobilization. My present full time official position is Coordination Manager at the Division Office of the Health Systems and Infectious Disease Division (HSID) and the major responsibilities include coordination with both inside departments and outside organizations including Government of Bangladesh as the focal point on behalf of the Division Director, make annual budgetary provisions of about US$ 1.0 million, monitor expenditures, assurance of security, cleanliness, availability of electricity, water and other infrastructural facilities for about 130 staff as well as execution of Director’s advices/instructions, compiling division reports for Board of Trustees, Annual Report and MEF; providing administrative and logistical support to Programme/Unit Heads as and when required.
I have additional responsibilities as the Managing Editor-cum-Translator for the Health and Science Bulletin (HSB). I have been performing these responsibilities since the inception of HSB in 2002. I translate articles of this quarterly bulletin, edit the articles both in English and Bangla together with other members of the editorial board, supervise printing, publication and dissemination to as many as 7,000 health professionals in home and abroad.
Besides, I am an environmental activist since early 1999. I founded Sunder Jiban and have been working as its Honorary Executive Director since its inception. At the same time, I was holding the post of its General Secretary until recently, but in its annual general meeting in 16 August 2008, I have been elected as the President. Moreover, I am involved with the Bangladesh Paribesh Andolan (BAPA) as a member of its Executive Committee and Member-Secretary to the Air and Noise Pollution Control Programme. I have presented several papers on different environmental issues in national and international conferences and also published a good number of articles and letters on various social and environmental issues in different leading dailies in Bangladesh.
Personal: I am married and my wife and I are blessed with 2 daughters.
