Sunder Jiban and BAPA organizes a seminar on climate change

Sunder Jiban and Bangladesh Paribesh Andolan (BAPA), the largest forum of environmentalists jointly organized a seminar on 17 April 2009 on 'Climate change: Its impact on health and environment' with Prof. Muzaffar Ahmed in the chair. Dr. Munirul Alam, Scientist, ICDDR,B presented the keynote paper. The news was widely covered by almost all leading dailies of the country including some electronic media. The government has decided to give priority on the subject in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) forum.

Attended a one-day Special Conference on Climate Change organized by the Bangladesh Paribesh Andolan (BAPA) and Bangladesh Environment Network (BEN) on Friday 2 January 2008 and moderated an afternoon session.

Sunder Jiban's proposal endorsed by the most leading daily Prothom Alo

Sunder Jiban's proposal to the government through a discussion meeting on 1 November to stop production of polythene has been endorsed by the country's most leading the Daily Prothom Alo in their Editorial on Friday 7 November 2008. In their editorial they have urged the government to follow the recommendations came out from the discussion meeting replacing polythene by jute products. Sunder Jiban itself also has submitted a memorandum to the Department of Environment with a copy to the Honourable Adviser and Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forest requesting them to take immediate necessary action to stop production of polythene and introduce jute, cotton or any other biodegradable products instead.

Discussion on the toxic effect of polythene

Sunder Jiban organized an open discussion on the "Toxic effect of polythene: Responsibility of the government and people on Saturday 1 November 2008 at the University of Dhaka. Mr. Sirajul I. Molla presided the meeting while Justice Golam Rabbani was present as the Chief Guest. Eminent Economist Prof. Dr. Atiur Rahman and Dr. S.K. Roy Senior Scientist were present as key discussants. Barrister Raihan Khalid presented the keynote paper. The speakers urged the government to stop production and marketing of hazardous polythene bags and make jute- and cloth-bags available in the market.

Attending the 8th IWRM as a bursary winner

I would like to reiterate that the 8th IWRM was a fantastic event and I enjoyed it very much and have been rejuvanated to march forward with new ideas and techniques of fundraising.

Now I would like to use my knowledge and understanding in various ways including opening of a window of opportunity for my fellow colleagues in Bangladesh also. With regard to this, Mr. Kazi Nabiul Haque and I have just initiated a new forum of fundraisers in Bangladesh. We have formed an ad-hoc committee with Mr. Haque as its Chairman and me as one of the members of its executive committee. We have met several times by now and trying to set the mission, vision and area of activities of the forum.

Sunder Jiban has taken a new initiative to raise its funds up to a certain level from its members, philanthropists and corporations. We have already started sending appeal letters to our friends, colleagues and philanthropists. In the meantime, we have received a couple of commitments to contribute Sunder Jiban. I personally committed to the Committee to collect at least US$1,500 by the end of the year and other members are also asked to collect contribution according to their capacity. Besides, members have committed to contribute about US$10 per month from their own pocket.
